A fast-moving brush fire in Moreno Valley has burned around 4,176 acres and is currently 25% contained. The fire, known as the Springs Fire, began around 11 a.m. on Friday in the 15900 block of Gilman Springs Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Initially, the fire was thought to cover about 5 acres. However, it spread quickly, reaching over 4,000 acres by just 10 p.m. the same day. Firefighters reported that it was dangerously close to structures in the Championship Drive area.
Evacuation orders were issued for several zones, including MOE-0507 and RVC-0825. An evacuation warning was also given for other nearby areas. Residents can find detailed information about these zones here.
To help those affected, an evacuation shelter has been set up at Valley View High School. Furthermore, the San Jacinto Animal Shelter is accepting pets displaced by the fire.
More than 40 engines, along with three air tankers and two helicopters, have been deployed to combat the flames. Gilman Springs Road has been temporarily closed between Alessandro Road and Bridge Street.
While there have been no reported injuries yet, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. In California, wildfires have become increasingly common, often fueled by dry conditions and high winds. In fact, a recent report from Cal Fire indicated that California has seen a significant increase in the number of large wildfires in the last decade, emphasizing the importance of vigilance during fire season.
