Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, recently criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that his “Make in India” initiative has failed. Gandhi remarked that Modi didn’t even mention “Make in India” in his speech regarding the Motion of Thanks to the President.
He pointed out that while the idea behind “Make in India” was good, its execution has been poor. Manufacturing, he noted, has dropped from 15.3% of GDP in 2014 to just 12.6%, marking the lowest level in 60 years. This decline, according to Gandhi, is concerning, especially when considering the pressing issue of youth unemployment in India.
Gandhi emphasized that both the current and previous governments have struggled to tackle this challenge effectively. He called for a strong vision to revitalize the manufacturing sector and make it competitive globally. He believes that focusing on emerging technologies like electric motors, batteries, optics, and artificial intelligence is crucial for growth in this area.
He warned that India is lagging behind China, which has a more robust industrial system. This gap, he argues, contributes to China’s ability to challenge India on various fronts.
In his response, PM Modi used strong language against Gandhi, suggesting that some political figures speak like “urban Naxals.” Modi also mocked Gandhi’s approach, claiming that those who seek attention through staged photo opportunities in poor communities might find serious discussions in Parliament uninteresting.
