Rahul Gandhi Secures Bail After Controversial Remarks About Indian Army During Bharat Jodo Yatra

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been granted bail by the Lucknow MP-MLA court, after he surrendered following five summons in a case related to comments he made about the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

His lawyer, Pranshu Agarwal, expressed confidence that the court would dismiss the case. However, the court required Gandhi to appear in person, and he faced potential contempt charges if he didn’t show up. He was supported by fellow Congress leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari and MLA Aradhna Mishra.

The case was initiated by Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organization. He alleged that Gandhi made misleading remarks about the Indian Army during his yatra on December 16, 2022. Specifically, Gandhi’s comments referred to a clash on December 9, where he suggested that Chinese soldiers were overpowering Indian troops in Arunachal Pradesh.

Srivastava argued that Gandhi’s statements were damaging, hurting the morale of Indian soldiers and affecting the sentiments of their families. In reality, the situation involved an unsuccessful infiltration attempt by Chinese soldiers on December 12, which was effectively countered by Indian forces.

Interestingly, the court emphasized the importance of the Freedom of Speech but noted that this right comes with responsibilities. It pointed out that while Gandhi’s remarks could be shared, they should not harm any group in society, including the military.
