Railways Invests ₹300 Crore to Revitalize Historic Brahmapur Station in Odisha: What This Means for Travelers

Odisha’s Brahmapur railway station is one of the oldest in India and a key hub in southern Odisha, serving over 25,000 passengers each day with more than 162 trains. To improve its facilities and handle the increasing number of travelers, the Ministry of Railways is launching a major upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This redevelopment plan will cost about ₹300 crore and will take place in phases.

The upgrades include adding three new rail lines and four additional platforms. This expansion will allow Brahmapur station to manage a higher volume of trains, providing better service for passengers. A new station building is also in the works to enhance the traveler experience.

The existing platforms will receive thorough renovations, including new floors and extended cover sheds to protect passengers from the weather. A Quick Watering System will be installed to speed up train operations, minimizing delays and improving efficiency.

To make movement easier, the station will feature an integrated passenger system. An extended Foot Over Bridge will ensure smooth transit between platforms. Lifts and escalators will be added to enhance accessibility, with features designed for passengers with disabilities. This makes the station one of the most accessible on the East Coast Railway network.

Plans are underway to alleviate congestion in the area surrounding the station. The main circulating area is already being improved with better roads and footpaths. These changes aim to provide a less chaotic experience for passengers as they arrive and depart.

The project also emphasizes safety and convenience. CCTV cameras, baggage scanners, and passenger information systems will enhance security and help travelers navigate. Multilingual signage will ensure everyone can find their way, catering to local speakers of Odia, Hindi, and English.

Interestingly, similar redevelopment projects are happening across India, driven by an increasing number of rail passengers. The Indian Railways reported a surge in passenger numbers post-pandemic, indicating a growing reliance on train travel. According to recent statistics, train journeys increased by over 30% in the last year alone, reflecting a trend towards better connectivity and modernization of railway services.

This upgrade at Brahmapur station is not just about expanding physical space; it’s about creating a better overall experience for countless travelers who rely on this vital transport link. By focusing on accessibility, efficiency, and safety, the station aims to meet current demands while preparing for a bustling future.
