Rain or Shine: How ‘Meals on 2 Wheels’ Brings Delicious Food to Seniors in Need

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On a hot summer day, we met Marie Anne Luber enjoying a splash in the fountain at Cascades Park. After cycling through her Meals on Wheels route, she shared her story.

Marie is part of a dedicated group known as the Capital City Cyclists, who’ve been delivering meals to seniors in Tallahassee for over 10 years. They affectionately call their mission “Meals on 2 Wheels.” Each week, this team loads up coolers filled with hot and cold meals and sets off to ensure seniors receive not just food, but also friendly visits.

Cyclist Michael Redig explained, “It’s about 12 miles for my route at times.” They ride rain or shine, and even tackle challenging routes. Marie jokingly noted how they refer to Continental Avenue as the “continental divide” due to its steepness. “We only skip the bike when there’s a tropical storm, hurricane, or sleet,” she laughed.

These volunteers make deliveries twice a week, visiting 32 different homes. Each stop is not just about food; it’s about connection. A smiling “God bless you, Miss Delbra” as meals are handed over shows the warmth they bring.

In a world where many seniors can feel isolated, this effort is more vital than ever. A recent survey found that about 30% of seniors live alone, which can lead to loneliness. Volunteers like the Capital City Cyclists provide much-needed company alongside a meal.
