Rajnath Singh Engages with CMDs of Eight Key DPSUs: Strengthening India’s Defence Landscape

On May 26, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led a critical review meeting with leaders from eight Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) in New Delhi. He praised the defence industry for its role in showcasing the Indian Armed Forces’ capabilities during Operation Sindoor. Singh underscored the government’s commitment to bolstering the defence industrial base and making DPSUs more competitive.

Considering recent geopolitical changes, Singh urged the DPSUs to adopt advanced technologies and increase their focus on research and development in modern warfare. According to Secretary of Defence Production Sanjeev Kumar, DPSUs are expected to achieve a production value exceeding ₹1,40,000 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, with around 78% of that coming from these undertakings.

While Singh acknowledged the impressive growth of defence production, he emphasized the importance of timely deliveries to the Armed Forces and other customers. He also encouraged DPSUs to enhance their exports through better marketing strategies. The meeting celebrated Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) achieving Maharatna status and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) earning Navratna status.

Additionally, the CMDs from these eight DPSUs—including HAL, MDL, and Bharat Electronics Limited—presented a total dividend of ₹2,138 crore to the Government for the financial year.

This increased focus on the defence sector is crucial as global tensions rise. A recent report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute revealed that global military spending reached a record high of $2.1 trillion in 2022, highlighting the urgency for countries like India to invest in advanced defense technologies and capabilities.
