CARY, N.C. – In a thrilling match, No. 15 NC State men’s soccer advanced to the NCAA National Championship for the first time in its history, defeating Saint Louis 2-1 at First Horizon Stadium.
With nearly 11,000 fans in attendance, this game saw the highest College Cup turnout since 2012, creating an electric atmosphere. The Wolfpack now boasts a record of 16-2-4, marking the most wins since 1990 when they last made it to the College Cup.
Senior midfielder Carlos Santamaria stepped in for Tyler Caton, playing a key role for 77 minutes. NC State dominated the first half, outshooting Saint Louis 8-0 but struggled to score despite several chances. In a pivotal moment, a penalty kick was awarded after a handball by Saint Louis. Drew Lovelace’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Jeremmi Abonnel, marking his fourth penalty save this season.
The breakthrough came in the 69th minute. Calem Tommy set up Isaac Heffess, who delivered a perfect cross to Donavan Phillip. With that goal, Phillip scored his 18th of the season, tying for the most in the country and achieving the highest total for NC State since Roy Lassiter in 1991.
Taig Healy continued his impressive form, scoring for the third consecutive game. He has found the net in crucial tournament moments, with three of his four season goals coming in the NCAA Tournament.
Saint Louis managed to score in the 81st minute from a penalty kick awarded for a foul by Heffess in the box, but NC State’s defense held firm for the last nine minutes to secure the win.
