RAM Crisis Leads Nex to Boost Prices on Playground Kids Console: What Parents Need to Know

The Nex Playground, a popular motion-control console designed for children, is set to raise its price by $50—from $250 to $300—starting April 1. This is the second price hike in just over a year, driven by a global RAM shortage largely caused by tech companies expanding their AI data centers.

In an open letter on March 25, Nex CEO David Lee expressed concern over the price change. He cited significant increases in the cost of essential components like memory (DDR) and storage (eMMC) as the main reason. Companies have been struggling to manage these rising costs, and many, like Nex, can no longer absorb them.

This shortage is impacting not just gaming but also various consumer electronics. A recent industry report noted that prices for PC components, such as RAM and graphics cards, could rise by about 15 to 20%. It’s a challenging time for tech manufacturers and consumers alike.

The Nex Playground, which launched in 2023 at $200, allows players to interact with games through body movement rather than traditional controllers. After initial slow sales, its popularity surged during the 2024 holiday season, driven by viral trends on TikTok. The console briefly outsold major competitors like the PS5 and Xbox.

As of now, Nex has sold around 1 million consoles. However, Lee acknowledges that this latest price increase could make the product less affordable for some families, although the company’s subscription service will remain unchanged. The intersecting challenges of rising costs and high demand highlight a significant shift in the gaming industry landscape.

Historically, the tech market has faced component shortages before, but this current situation is unique. The rapid growth of AI technology is reshaping supply chains in unexpected ways. Experts believe that without improvements in manufacturing and sourcing, these shortages could persist, affecting everything from gaming to general tech availability. Keep an eye on the evolving landscape to see how companies adapt and what that means for consumers moving forward.
