Arizona State men’s basketball coach Randy Bennett is currently facing a health challenge. However, he assures fans that he’s in good hands and that the momentum of the program remains strong. In a recent statement, Bennett said, “I’ve been dealing with an illness, but I’m on a solid path. I’m grateful for the care from the Mayo Clinic. Everything is under control, and I’ll be back to full strength soon.”
This news comes after ASU postponed his introductory press conference last week due to his health. While the press conference has yet to be rescheduled, the excitement around the team continues, especially with new additions to Bennett’s staff. He recently hired associate head coaches Rick Croy and Joe Rahon. Notably, Croy’s son, JRob Croy, a recruit for 2026, recently switched his commitment from Saint Mary’s to ASU.
Bennett expressed confidence in his staff, stating, “Our momentum hasn’t changed. I’m excited about our new associate head coaches. They bring experience, relationships, and energy to our program.” He stressed his commitment to making Sun Devil basketball a powerhouse.
Before joining ASU, Bennett spent 25 years at Saint Mary’s, where he recorded a 589-228 record and led the team to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. ASU athletic director Graham Rossini highlighted Bennett’s impressive track record and connection to the Valley, stating, “His accomplishments at St. Mary’s are well-known. His dedication to ASU is clear.”
The changes at ASU signify a shift in strategy, especially after the university decided against renewing former coach Bobby Hurley’s contract. This new chapter, under Bennett’s guidance, aims to elevate the program’s status in college basketball.
While health issues can be challenging, they often bring communities together, as seen on social media. Many fans have expressed their support for Bennett, sharing messages of encouragement. This collective spirit could play a crucial role in maintaining the strength and focus of the team moving forward.
As college basketball continues to evolve, programs like ASU are navigating change with hope and ambition. With a new coach and a fresh staff, the Sun Devils are ready to make their mark this season.
