Ian Rapoport recently dismissed Mike Florio’s latest speculation about Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Florio suggested that Rodgers might want a clause in his contract allowing him to be released midseason if the team struggles. However, Rapoport was quick to shut that idea down, emphasizing that it seems to be more of a personal theory from Florio rather than an actual report.
During an interview on the Between The Tackles podcast, Rapoport said, “I really don’t. I don’t see what that would even look like. Contractually, there’s only so much that can be guaranteed.” He pointed out that any such agreement would amount to little more than a handshake, which isn’t standard practice in the NFL.
Interestingly, the Steelers haven’t had a losing season since 2003. With their improved roster, they’re expected to remain competitive. Rapoport believes that talk about a conditional release clause is premature.
Florio’s comments echo speculation he made last year, where he frequently offered theories that didn’t pan out, such as Rodgers potentially appearing at the draft. Now, the focus is on whether the Steelers can reach a deal with Rodgers, whose agent, David Dunn, is known for being effective in negotiations.
As organized team activities (OTAs) approach, the Steelers may soon learn Rodgers’ decision. If history repeats itself, they might have to wait a bit longer, but for now, it seems Rodgers is simply taking his time.
