A unique albino narrow-mouthed toad was found in Chansaem Village, Daejeon. This is only the second time such a creature has ever been spotted in South Korea.

Moon Kwang-yeon, director of the Korean Herpetological Society, announced the discovery on June 14. The toad, which has a striking white skin and red eyes, represents a rare genetic condition called albinism. Animals with this trait often face challenges in the wild due to their lack of camouflage and increased sensitivity to sunlight.

This female toad was seen with a male during mating season, which typically occurs as the monsoon season begins and shallow pools fill with rainwater. Narrow-mouthed toads rely on these clean, water-rich habitats, making their presence a key indicator of environmental health.

These toads are vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures can dry up their breeding grounds, posing a serious threat to their survival. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as Vulnerable, while South Korea classifies them as a Class II endangered species.

Moon emphasized the need to protect these habitats: “If the soil is contaminated or water is polluted, the species cannot survive. Their presence signals environmental health.”
