“Let’s get started!” Kathryn Newton shouted as the lights dimmed at the SXSW premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. She was surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd at the Paramount Theatre, ready to enjoy a horror film—perfect for a Friday the 13th screening.
Newton kept the energy high, laughing and interacting with the audience from her seat next to co-star Shawn Hatosy. Although franchise star Samara Weaving was absent due to her pregnancy, Sarah Michelle Gellar filled in, bringing a fun cutout of Weaving’s face. Weaving had recorded a video for fans and posed for pictures earlier in the week.
The filmmakers, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, revealed that they never intended to make a sequel. Surprising twists in the new script connected Weaving’s character and Newton’s character as long-lost sisters. This shared backstory gives the film a new layer that enhances its horror elements.
Experts in the film industry emphasize that practical effects often create the most memorable moments in horror films. Gillett explained, “When we set off blood cannons, everyone watches the monitor closely. The real reactions make it feel intense and authentic for the audience.” This can elevate the viewer’s experience, as authenticity resonates with audiences.
Interestingly, the movie industry sees a shift toward more interactive experiences. According to a recent survey by Statista, over 67% of millennials prefer movies that offer participatory elements, reflecting how audience engagement is essential today.
Newton shared an amusing idea for a potential third film, joking about switching genres entirely. “Imagine a rom-com where two sisters meet two brothers—it would be a total shift,” she laughed, “No horror, just romance!”
As excitement builds ahead of its release date on March 20, audiences are eager to see how this sequel expands the Ready or Not universe while maintaining its thrilling roots.
