In 2015, I moved to Sydney from north Wales. Sydney was always my dream, but immigration rules changed. To get permanent residency as a barber, I had to move to Tasmania or the Northern Territory. I chose Darwin, fearing Tasmania’s weather would feel too much like home. I packed my bags in 2018 and arrived with little knowledge about the city.
I met Ben on Grindr. He was warm and friendly, eager to show me around. He asked if I’d be attending Darwin Pride. A few days later, he invited me to a pool party, not mentioning he was hosting as his drag persona, Miss Ellaneous. I was surprised and captivated as I watched him perform—dancing, laughing, and engaging the crowd. After his show, we spent the whole day together, sharing stories and jokes. The chemistry was undeniable, but I soon realized Ben was busy with his travel and shows, making romance seem far-fetched.
Then came COVID. Suddenly, we were both stuck in Darwin. That’s when we really started to connect. One weekend, we went to a villa without phone reception. As we sat outside playing Scrabble, I felt completely at ease. No grand gestures; just a moment of quiet connection that made me realize I was in love.
Since then, life has had its ups and downs. I lost my shop in a fire, and Ben moved to Sydney for WorldPride. I felt lost, so I followed him. We married in 2022, just us and two witnesses, later celebrating with friends in different cities.
Now, we live in Brunswick Heads. My new job as a self-employed barber allows me more flexibility, and Ben continues to perform. I love seeing him on stage, whether as Tina or Miss Ellaneous. He has incredible talent, and I’m proud to be his partner.
Our relationship is enriched by our different cultures. Ben is a First Nations man, connected to the Malak Malak and Torres Strait Islands. I share my Welsh heritage with him, and we learn from each other. He advocates for his community, adding depth to our bond.
It’s a beautiful journey. I feel like I’ve won the lottery being with Ben. We laugh, support, and love each other deeply. I keep falling more in love, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
