Indian Railways is on a roll! In the first two months of the fiscal year 2026-27, it loaded 145 million tonnes of freight. That’s a 1.3% increase compared to last year, even with challenges from the conflict in West Asia that affected many logistics networks.
A big part of this success comes from strong performances in iron ore, steel, fertilizers, and other goods. The railway’s focus has been on ensuring that essential items move smoothly across the country, thanks to careful monitoring and smart use of resources.
On the passenger side, over 61 million travelers chose trains in May 2026, up from 59 million in the same month last year. Most of this growth is from non-suburban journeys, which saw a 7.4% hike, growing from 280 million to 300 million passengers. This trend highlights how rail travel remains popular for both short and long trips.
Among the goods transported, the “Balance Other Goods” segment saw significant growth of 16%. Iron ore loading was up by 4.8%, while pig iron and finished steel increased by 3.5%. Fertilizer loading also rose healthily by 6.2%. Coal continues to dominate railway freight traffic, maintaining nearly a 1% growth, which is crucial for energy production in thermal power plants.
To keep efforts efficient, Indian Railways is closely tracking both domestic and international container traffic to ensure smooth operations. This proactive approach plays a vital role in maintaining economic activity across regions.
With the summer travel season, Indian Railways has added many special trains to meet increased demand. They are also modernizing services, operating 164 Vande Bharat trains—including a new Sleeper Vande Bharat service between Howrah and Kamakhya—and 68 Amrit Bharat services, with new routes added this May.
