“Get loud, it’s senior prom!” shouted a student, kicking off UNC’s first Senior Prom on a Saturday night. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as students posed for photos and admired each other’s stunning outfits.
As attendees walked the red carpet, event organizers beamed with pride at the decor they had crafted over months—splashes of black, red, and gold balloons, vibrant lights synced to music, and a lively photo booth. The excitement was palpable, especially with Ariana Grande’s “God is a woman” playing in the background.
The mastermind behind this event was Senior Class President Timothy McLendon. After experiencing the challenges of graduating in 2021, he wanted to create a memorable moment for his classmates, many of whom missed out on traditional senior year events. “A lot of focus goes to the class of 2020, but we didn’t have a typical senior year at all,” he noted.
Timothy believes that prom is a significant chapter in American culture. "People look back on their prom as a pivotal moment in their lives," he shared. “Without it, I can’t share those memories with my future kids. I wanted to give us all another shot at that nostalgia.”
The prom featured an exciting theme: “Casino Night.” Students enjoyed playing poker, roulette, and blackjack, all for fun prizes rather than cash. This unique twist kept the event lively and engaging. Meanwhile, a variety of delicious snacks—from cake pops to savory caprese kebabs—was available, funded by the $15 entry fee.
Planning the event wasn’t easy; it involved booking venues like the Dean Dome, which came with its own set of challenges. Vice President Imani Chabikuli collaborated closely with McLendon to make everything possible. Their hard work paid off, turning a dream into reality.
Recent surveys show that events like prom are integral to the high school experience, creating lasting bonds and memories among peers. High school experiences are crucial for social development, and events like this help fill the emotional gap left by lost opportunities. This prom aimed not only to celebrate their achievements but also to relive moments they felt were taken from them.
In a world where unique experiences are becoming more valued, the success of this inaugural Senior Prom may spark a trend. Such events could foster a sense of community and nostalgia that many recent graduates crave. As McLendon said, "It’s not just about celebrating; it’s about reconnecting with each other and our shared high school journey."
