Red Team Triumphs in Thrilling Annual Red and Black Scrimmage | University of Georgia Athletics

BISHOP, Ga. – The University of Georgia equestrian team, the reigning national champions, showcased their skills in the annual Red and Black Scrimmage on Saturday at the UGA Equestrian Complex. The Red Team triumphed over the Black Team with a score of 9-7, gearing up for their season opener against Baylor on October 3.

Here are some highlights from the scrimmage:

  • In the Fences event, the Black Team scored 3-2, with junior Liza Cram earning a personal best of 88 points.
  • The Red Team excelled in Horsemanship, winning 2-0. Senior Kendall McClintock led with a score of 73.5.
  • In the Flat event, the Red Team continued to dominate, scoring 3-2, with freshmen Kingsley Dey and Helena Timpany tying for the highest score at 80.
  • The event was evenly matched in Reining, with both teams scoring 2-2. Freshman Avery Taylor had the top score of the day at 72.5.
  • Outstanding Performer honors went to Liza Cram (Fences), Emma Popp (Horsemanship), Kingsley Dey (Flat), and Avery Taylor (Reining).

Head coach Meghan Boenig expressed her excitement about the team’s performance, especially noting the strong showings from the freshmen. “It’s great to see them perform so well right out of the gate. Their confidence bodes well for our future,” she remarked. Boenig also highlighted the hot weather as a challenge, noting the team’s impressive attitude and work ethic throughout the event.

Liza Cram shared her feelings about her performance, emphasizing her preparation and enjoyment riding Carino, her horse. “I felt prepared from all my practices. It went well,” she said, reflecting on the thrill of competing.

As the top-ranked team, Georgia is set to start the official season against Baylor, promising an exciting matchup for fans. Recent statistics show over 60% of collegiate equestrian teams reported increased competition levels this year, making the upcoming season even more highly anticipated.

The UGA Equestrian Complex, known for its excellent facilities, will welcome fans at 2 p.m. for the season opener on October 3. Admission is open to the public, adding to the vibrant atmosphere that defines college sports.
