Reddit is testing a new feature that adds verified profiles, marked by a grey checkmark next to the username of notable users or businesses.
Reddit recently announced that they are introducing verified profiles. This checkmark aims to clarify who users are engaging with, especially during important moments like AMAs or news reporting. In their blog post, Reddit emphasizes the necessity of verification to reduce misinformation.
Once upon a time, a verification checkmark simply confirmed a public figure’s identity. Now, it seems to have morphed into a status symbol for some platforms. Reddit hopes this feature can encourage trust by verifying public figures while respecting its core value of pseudonymity, which allows users to speak freely without their real names impacting their words. They reassure users that opting into this feature is completely voluntary and doesn’t elevate anyone above others.
It’s worth noting that not having a checkmark does not imply fraudulence. The pilot program will initially include only a select group of users, meaning even some well-known Redditors might not get verified. For instance, skateboard legend Tony Hawk participates casually in discussions on skateboarding subreddits, but he may not seek a checkmark to prove his identity.
Currently, eligible users are active contributors in good standing and trusted partners, a term Reddit hasn’t clearly defined. However, those who often engage in NSFW content will not be eligible for verification. The process for verification is manual for now, though Reddit plans to implement a third-party system later.
Interestingly, this rollout comes at a time when concerns about online authenticity are rising. Other platforms, like the upcoming Digg reboot led by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, aim to counteract the rise of bots and AI agents. They’re considering methods such as zero-knowledge proofs to ensure real human interactions. In a similar vein, Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, is launching a human verification app to combat the proliferation of bots online.
As our digital landscape evolves, the idea of confirming identity while maintaining anonymity remains a delicate balance.
