Despite this setback in the UK, Refinery29 continues to operate in the US, Germany, and France. The Australian edition closed in 2024, although some content is still available through syndication.

Many creators shared their feelings about the closing on social media. Kristine Romano, a former art director, expressed sadness about her departure after 5.5 years. She emphasized how much she valued her time at Refinery29 UK.

Freelance writer Toluwalogo Niji-Olawepo described the closure as “painful.” She noted how significant Refinery29 had been in her growth as a writer. Similarly, Chanté Joseph raised concerns about the future of media, indicating a sense of uncertainty and loss among writers and contributors.

Lauren Gordon highlighted the importance of Unbothered, stating that it was a rare space in UK journalism centered on Black women’s experiences. She felt its absence would leave a significant void.

In a statement, a representative from Sundial Media & Technology Group, the owner of Refinery29, acknowledged the challenges but emphasized a shift towards new opportunities. They stated they are committed to driving innovation in media while maintaining a focus on human connections.

Historically, Refinery29 has been a leader in lifestyle journalism. Since its inception in 2005, it focused on diverse narratives that many mainstream outlets overlooked. This ethos resonated strongly within niche communities, making its closure all the more impactful.
