Relic Entertainment has launched a new business strategy after becoming independent from Sega in March 2024. CEO Justin Dowdeswell shared some exciting plans with Game Developer.
The studio will focus on three main areas: supporting existing games, developing smaller projects, and revisiting older franchises with remasters or new releases.
Dowdeswell assured that no layoffs will occur as part of this new direction. After the Sega transition last April, some employees were let go, with reports suggesting around 41 positions were affected.
He mentioned, “Our new approach helps us meet business needs while staying responsive to market opportunities.” By working with smaller teams and shorter timelines, they aim to release games within one to two years. These new titles will have smaller budgets, differing from the larger costs associated with their well-known real-time strategy games.
Dowdeswell concluded by expressing confidence in their new independent path, stating, “We’ll leverage our strengths to create innovative, high-quality games that players will love.” Relic is ready to build for the future while honoring its rich gaming legacy.
