Remembering Ananda Lewis: Former MTV and BET Host Who Courageously Shared Her Breast Cancer Journey

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ananda Lewis, a beloved figure from the ’90s, has passed away at 52. Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, shared the news on Facebook, revealing that Lewis had been fighting breast cancer.

Lewis first captured audiences as a host on BET’s “Teen Summit,” where she discussed important issues facing Black youth. She interviewed cultural icons like Kobe Bryant and Tupac Shakur, earning herself an NAACP Image Award.

In 1997, she transitioned to MTV, becoming a fixture on shows like “MTV Live” and “Total Request Live.” However, she felt some pushback from fans during this change. She mentioned, “Growth is necessary,” highlighting the importance of seizing opportunities in life.

Her own show, “The Ananda Lewis Show,” aired for one season in 2001. Lewis aimed to refine the traditional daytime talk format rather than overhaul it entirely. While her show didn’t last long, she later became a correspondent for “The Insider.”

Lewis was candid about her breast cancer journey. She announced her diagnosis in 2020, starting from stage 3 and advancing to stage 4 last year. Initially, she chose alternative treatments over a double mastectomy but later became a strong advocate for early detection through regular mammograms.

“Early detection changes your outcome,” she urged, encouraging women to prioritize their health. Her message resonates, especially since recent studies show that early detection can significantly improve breast cancer survival rates, with five-year survival rates for localized disease reaching 99%. This emphasizes the value of regular screenings.

Lewis leaves behind a legacy of empowerment and advocacy, reminding us all of the importance of health and self-care. Her influence will continue to inspire many.
