Cecilia Giménez, known worldwide for her infamous restoration of the “Ecce Homo” mural, has passed away at the age of 94. This mural, created by local artist Elías García Martínez, was once a beloved piece in the Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja, Spain.
In 2012, Giménez, wanting to help, took it upon herself to restore the artwork. Unfortunately, her efforts resulted in what many dubbed the “Monkey Christ” due to its strikingly altered appearance. The botched restoration quickly drew sarcasm and mockery online. Giménez faced a wave of anxiety as the criticism surged, reportedly losing 37 pounds during that time. But she turned her notoriety into opportunity, selling her own artwork on eBay and donating the proceeds to charity.
What began as a disaster became a surprising attraction. The church started charging admission, and tourism flourished—Ryanair even introduced special flights to Zaragoza. Today, thousands flock to Borja to see the mural, which has brought in around €600,000, funding local initiatives like care homes for the elderly.
A recent opera titled “Behold the Man,” inspired by Giménez’s story, premiered in 2023 at Opera Las Vegas, though Giménez couldn’t attend. Her niece represented the family that night, marking a new chapter in the mural’s legacy.
Local mayor Eduardo Arilla remembered Giménez not just for her art but for her resilience. A widow with two disabled children, one of whom sadly passed away due to muscular dystrophy, she led a challenging life. Arilla emphasized her contributions to Borja, announcing plans to name a center and perhaps a street or square in her honor.
A statement from the local church highlighted her strength and generosity, recognizing the love she garnered not only locally but from around the world.
