Chip Taylor, the talented singer-songwriter behind classics like “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning,” has passed away at the age of 86. His children, Kris and Kelly, shared the sad news in a heartfelt statement, mentioning that he died peacefully in hospice care.
Taylor was born James Wesley Voight on March 21, 1940, in Yonkers, New York. Though he initially pursued a career in professional golf, he soon shifted his focus to music. He left college and moved to New York City to chase his dreams. It was there that he signed with April Blackwood, a company that evolved into EMI and later Sony Music.
His most famous song, “Wild Thing,” was recorded by The Troggs in 1966. This catchy tune was honored by being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2019. Jimi Hendrix gave it his own twist in 1967, and The Runaways added their flair in 1976. Taylor’s “Angel of the Morning” was recorded by Evie Sands the same year and has seen numerous covers since, featuring stars like Dusty Springfield and Olivia Newton-John.
Beyond his own hits, Taylor wrote songs for legendary artists like Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Petty. His influence in the music scene was vast, resonating with many across generations.
In 2007, Taylor founded Train Wreck Records, allowing him to release numerous solo albums and collaborate with various bands. He cherished music as a way to connect with people and appreciated his fans, whom he regarded as friends.
He is survived by his children and five grandchildren, with whom he created the song “Kids to Save the Planet” in 2011. His long-time wife, Joan Carole Frey, passed away last year. The family has requested donations to the Metropolitan Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund in place of flowers, honoring Taylor’s dual passions for music and golf.
