LOS ANGELES (AP) — Danielle Spencer, who charmed audiences as Dee Thomas on the classic sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” has passed away at 60 after a long fight with cancer, according to her family spokesperson, Sandra Jones.

Spencer’s character, Dee, was known for her quick wit and deadpan humor. She often teased her older brother, Raj, and his friends, bringing a unique blend of sass and seriousness to the show. One of her memorable catchphrases was, “Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama,” which became a fan favorite.

Sadly, Spencer faced great adversity early in life. At just 12 years old, she survived a serious car accident that left her in a coma for three weeks and claimed the life of her stepfather. The accident led to multiple surgeries and health challenges throughout her life.

In 2018, she underwent emergency surgery due to complications from her past injuries. This struggle continued when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, leading to a double mastectomy. Despite these challenges, Spencer showed incredible resilience. She once shared, “It’s important to keep moving forward, no matter how hard it gets.”

Beyond her acting career, Spencer became a veterinarian, earning her degree from Tuskegee University in 1993. She balanced her love for animals with occasional acting roles, including a part in the 1997 film “As Good as It Gets.” This transition reflects a growing trend among former child stars who seek new paths beyond their early fame.
