Dave Ball, a key figure in the synth-pop duo Soft Cell, has died at the age of 66, as reported by the BBC. He passed peacefully in his sleep at his home in London. Although no specific cause was given, he had faced serious health issues following a back injury.
Ball was the musical mastermind behind Soft Cell. While Marc Almond, the group’s charismatic lead singer, captured the audience’s attention, Ball crafted the duo’s distinctive sound. Soft Cell broke ground in the early ’80s as one of the first successful synth-pop bands, paving the way for electronic music that soon flooded the charts. Their debut album, “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret,” featured hits like “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” and “Tainted Love,” the latter selling around 21 million copies worldwide.
Just weeks before his passing, Ball performed at the Rewind Festival, often using a wheelchair due to his injury. Still, he managed to work on new projects. Almond shared that they had recently completed an album titled “Danceteria,” inspired by a legendary New York nightclub of the ’80s. “He was focused and so happy with the new album,” Almond reflected, noting that 2026 was shaping up to be an exciting year for Ball.
Their story began in the late 1970s when Ball and Almond met at Leeds Polytechnic while studying art. They formed Soft Cell and released their first EP shortly after. Their breakthrough came with “Tainted Love,” which combined their unique sound with a classic Motown track, proving to be a cultural milestone and one of the biggest hits of its time.
Soft Cell faced challenges after their initial success, disbanding in 1984 but reuniting for albums in 2001 and again in 2018. Almond honored Ball, saying, “He was the heart and soul of Soft Cell. Thank you, Dave, for being an immense part of my life.”
