David Gergen, a prominent figure in American politics and media, has passed away at the age of 83. Gergen’s career spanned decades, during which he advised four U.S. presidents: Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton. His roles included speechwriter, communications director, and presidential counselor.

Born in North Carolina, Gergen graduated from Yale and Harvard Law School. He later founded the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, serving as its director for many years. His work focused on fostering leadership and collaboration in politics.

Colleagues remember Gergen for his kindness and integrity. Jeremy Weinstein, Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School, remarked on Gergen’s lifelong dedication to supporting leaders in public service. Hannah Riley Bowles, a former co-director of the Center for Public Leadership, also praised his character and ability to see the good in everyone.
