David Johansen, the legendary frontman of the New York Dolls and a key figure in glam rock and punk music, has passed away at the age of 75 in his Staten Island home. His stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey, confirmed the news.
Recently, Johansen disclosed that he was battling Stage 4 cancer, a brain tumor, and he also suffered from a broken back. He was actively raising funds through the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund to help cover his medical expenses, admitting, “I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency.”
Throughout his career, Johansen explored various musical styles, from blues to calypso. His most notable success came in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when he embraced his alter ego, Buster Poindexter, known for the hit “Hot Hot Hot.” However, it was during the 1970s with the New York Dolls that he truly made his mark. The Dolls were a revolutionary band characterized by their loud, flamboyant style and a mix of gritty rock and glam aesthetics. They inspired countless artists across punk, heavy metal, and alternative genres.
One of those inspired artists was Morrissey, the iconic frontman of The Smiths. Morrissey saw the Dolls perform on television when he was only 13. He was struck by the band’s energy and style, calling it his “first real emotional experience.” This moment led him to become the president of the band’s British fan club.
The New York Dolls were known for pushing boundaries, particularly with their bold fashion choices and cross-dressing. Their onstage antics and wild personalities were often highlighted in the press. In a 1972 Rolling Stone article, Ed McCormack humorously noted that the band passed around lipstick like many bands might share a joint. Johansen himself described their outrageous wardrobes, stating, “These heavy metal bands in L.A. don’t have the market cornered on wearing their mothers’ clothes.”
David Johansen’s contributions to music and culture will not be forgotten. He was a true pioneer, leaving a legacy that continues to influence artists today.
