Don Soffer was a transformative figure for Aventura, Florida. Known as the city’s “godfather,” his vision turned 785 acres of swampland into a thriving community with high-rises, golf courses, and the popular Aventura Mall. He saw potential where others hesitated.

Soffer passed away on July 20 at the age of 92. Born on September 20, 1932, in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, he learned about business from his father, Harold Soffer, who sold appliances and cars. After graduating from Brandeis University in 1955 with a degree in economics, he joined his father’s construction firm, specializing in suburban shopping malls.

At 35, Soffer took a bold step by acquiring land in Miami-Dade County. This was the foundation for what would become Aventura. His persistence showed that great things can arise from vision and determination. He also believed in giving back, supporting various causes, particularly in education and health.

His contributions to the University of Miami are notable. A generous donation of $25 million helped establish the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute, fostering crucial research in areas like cardiology and aging. In recognition of his contributions, the Clinical Research Building was renamed the Don Soffer Clinical Research Center, showcasing his impact in the medical field.

His family continues this legacy. His daughter, Jacquelyn R. Soffer, is a trustee at the University of Miami. They also contributed $14 million to build the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility for football student-athletes, which opened in 2018.

Soffer’s philanthropy extended beyond the university. He donated $15 million to Brandeis University and supported various health-related causes. He also helped build the New Hope 4 Haiti orphanage and supported organizations like the Humane Society of Greater Miami.
