Donald Gibb, best known for his role as Frederick “Ogre” Palowaski in the iconic 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds, has passed away at 71. His family shared the news with Rolling Stone, expressing their sadness. They described him as a loving father and an unforgettable actor who roused laughter and joy throughout his life. His presence, both on and off the screen, left a mark on many.
Gibb stood out with his impressive height of six-foot-four and his memorable line, “Nerds!” This line became one of the defining moments of the film. He would reprise this role in Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise (1987) and Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds in Love (1994).
In addition to his comedic roles, Gibb earned recognition in action films. He teamed up with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the martial arts classic Bloodsport (1988) as Ray Jackson. He made a return for the sequel, Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite (1996).
Gibb was born on August 4, 1954, in New York City but spent much of his youth in California. He initially pursued sports, playing basketball on a scholarship at the University of New Mexico and then moving to the University of San Diego for football. Before acting, he even had a spot on the San Diego Chargers roster.
His filmography includes titles such as Conan the Barbarian (1982), Meatballs Part II (1984), and even a role in Hancock (2008). On television, he appeared in popular series like Cheers, The X-Files, and Seinfeld, and played Dr. Death on the HBO sitcom 1st & Ten for six seasons.
Gibb’s passing is particularly poignant as it follows the death of his fellow Revenge of the Nerds cast member, Robert Carradine, who also left us at the age of 71 earlier this year.
