NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The NFL community is mourning the loss of former Tennessee Titans coach Dave McGinnis, who passed away at 74. Known fondly as “Coach Mac,” he had been hospitalized due to illness since early March.
Coach Mac was more than just a coach—he was a beloved figure in the league. Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk expressed her heartache, sharing how he was like family to many.
McGinnis’s coaching journey included a challenging tenure as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2000 to 2003, where his record was 17-40. Despite the struggles, he contributed significantly to the Cardinals, including efforts to secure their new stadium. His time ended after a disappointing season, even with standout performances from players like Anquan Boldin, who was named the AP’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Michael Bidwell, owner of the Cardinals, reflected on McGinnis’s passion for the game. “He was a ‘ball coach’ through and through,” Bidwell remarked. “Coach Mac loved football and the people involved in it.”
After his time with the Cardinals, McGinnis joined the Titans as a linebackers coach under Jeff Fisher. He served the Titans until 2011, ultimately becoming the assistant head coach. Strunk highlighted his unwavering dedication to the organization, saying McGinnis deeply cared for everyone around him, and his kindness made a lasting impression.
During a coaching career that spanned from 1986 to 2016, he worked with eight Hall of Fame players. Notably, while coaching the Cardinals, he mentored Pat Tillman, who left football to serve in the Army after 9/11 and tragically lost his life in Afghanistan in 2004.
McGinnis returned to Nashville in 2017, joining Titans Radio as a color analyst. His wisdom and approachability endeared him to both players and coaches alike. Burke Nihill, Titans president and CEO, shared how McGinnis always uplifted those around him. “He had an incredible gift for making everyone feel valued,” Nihill noted.
In his final moments, McGinnis was surrounded by family at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital. His impact continues to resonate deeply within the Titans organization and the broader NFL community.
This loss leaves a significant gap that will be felt by many. The legacy of Coach Mac’s dedication, love for the game, and warmth will not be forgotten.
