Remembering Pat Lopez

Today, we mourn the loss of Patricia “Pat” Lopez, who passed away on March 2 at her Lincoln home after a brave fight against illness.

Pat dedicated over 30 years to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD). She started as a public health nurse in 1975, working tirelessly to improve the health of our community, especially the most vulnerable. She created healthcare programs for Medicaid recipients and set up health stations in underserved areas, always striving to make a difference before she retired in 2004.

Even after retirement, Pat stayed active in public health. She contributed to Nebraska’s statewide public health system and led the Public Health Association of Nebraska. Her efforts helped local health departments gain national accreditation, ensuring they met high standards.

In 2019, Pat returned to LLCHD as the interim director, a role that soon became permanent. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her leadership was vital. She helped keep Lancaster County safe, achieving low mortality rates and high vaccination rates. After the pandemic, she initiated programs like the Youth Substance Use Prevention Project and Family Connects, which supports new families with public health assistance.

Pat was a respected mentor and advocate. Her career was marked by a deep commitment to public service and a caring approach towards others.

Statement from Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird:

“I am heartbroken by the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Pat Lopez. She was a guardian of our community, providing wisdom and strength in challenging times. Pat’s priority was always the well-being of our residents, and her leadership truly saved lives during the pandemic. I will forever cherish the discussions we had while navigating tough decisions and supporting one another. Pat worked tirelessly for this community, driven not by duty but by genuine care. My heart goes out to her family and everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Pat Lopez made Lincoln a healthier and stronger place.”

Statement from Kerry Kernen, LLCHD Director:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pat Lopez. This loss affects not only Lincoln and Lancaster County but all of Nebraska. Pat’s unwavering passion for public health and her dedication to our community shone through during her 50-year career. We were fortunate to have her lead the Health Department, especially during the pandemic. We will continue her work and honor her memory.”
