Remembering Greg Brown: Celebrated Cake Guitarist and ‘The Distance’ Songwriter Passes Away

Greg Brown, the founding guitarist of the alternative rock band Cake, has passed away. Cake shared the news on social media, expressing deep sadness over his loss. They highlighted his significant contributions to the band’s early sound and stated, “His creative impact will be missed.” The exact age and date of his death have not been revealed.

Cake formed in 1991 in Sacramento, California. Greg played guitar alongside frontman John McCrea and multi-instrumentalist Vince DiFiore. While McCrea was the main songwriter, Brown co-wrote several songs, including the band’s hit “The Distance” from their 1996 album Fashion Nugget.

In a 2021 interview with Billboard, Brown reflected on choosing “The Distance” as a single. He initially thought another track, “Frank Sinatra,” was a better choice, but the label disagreed. “I liked the way it sounded,” he said, but he didn’t see its potential at first.

After touring for Fashion Nugget, Brown left Cake due to personal challenges, prioritizing his health. He then pursued various musical projects, including his own band, Deathray. He also collaborated with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer on a short-lived project called Homie.

In 2011, after releasing two albums with Deathray, Brown returned briefly to Cake for a track on their album Showroom of Compassion. His journey illustrates both personal struggle and a passion for music, resonating with many fans, especially as artists often face challenges behind the scenes.

Music industry experts note that the impact of a musician often extends beyond their immediate projects. Brown’s songwriting not only influenced Cake but also shaped the sound of a generation. His departure and return to the band reflect a common theme in music: the balancing act between personal well-being and artistic collaboration.

As fans and fellow musicians remember Greg Brown, his legacy will live on in the music that many continue to enjoy.
