Grizzwald “Grizz” Chapman, known for his role as Grizz on 30 Rock, has passed away at 52. His cousin, Harlem Globetrotter Donte Harrison, shared the sad news on social media. He noted that Grizz fought through many health struggles, including illness and dialysis, before passing peacefully in his sleep on May 22, 2026.
Grizz’s journey to fame began while he was working as a bouncer at a strip club. He caught the attention of comedian Tracy Morgan, leading to his casting alongside Morgan as part of the show’s entourage. Chapman emphasized that his hard work, not just his friendship with Morgan, earned him the role. Due to budget cuts at NBC, only two of the four original entourage members remained, and Grizz made the cut thanks to Morgan’s support.
Chapman also faced challenges in his career due to his size. In a 2012 interview, he recounted how casting directors often told him, “We don’t know how to market you,” or “You’re too big.” Yet, he believed his unique presence was valuable; as he put it, there wasn’t another “seven-foot, lovable guy” like him in the industry.
In addition to 30 Rock, Chapman starred in his own YouTube series and appeared in shows like The Blacklist and Blue Bloods. He received a kidney transplant in 2010 due to kidney disease and became a spokesperson for the National Kidney Foundation that same year, highlighting his resilience and commitment to health awareness.
