Remembering Joan Kennedy: The Legacy of Edward Kennedy’s First Wife

BOSTON (AP) — Joan B. Kennedy, the former wife of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, passed away at 89. Her life was marked by a tumultuous marriage and challenges with alcoholism and mental health.

Joan, born Virginia Joan Bennett in Bronxville, N.Y., was a model and a talented pianist when she married Ted Kennedy in 1958. She was part of a prominent family, closely linked to the Kennedys, including her brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy.

Over the years, Joan faced numerous trials. The historic events of her husband’s career and the Kennedy family tragedies, including the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, shaped much of her life. In 1969, Ted was involved in the Chappaquiddick incident, where he left the scene of a fatal car accident. This scandal haunted him and strained their relationship.

Despite these challenges, Joan supported Ted through his political career and raised three children with him. She experienced several miscarriages, including one shortly after the Chappaquiddick incident. By the time Ted sought the presidency in 1980, they were already estranged. Their divorce followed soon after.

Joan’s struggle with alcohol became public, and she became one of the first women to openly discuss her issues with drinking and mental health. Her son, Ted Jr., praised her openness, expressing admiration for her courage in addressing these challenges.

In the 1992 interview, Joan shared how playing the piano provided comfort during tough times, helping her cope with the loss of family members and her difficult marriage. She continued to play music, believing in its power to heal and uplift.

Joan Kennedy’s legacy includes her contributions to the arts and her role as a voice for individuals facing similar struggles with mental health. Her family honored her memory, emphasizing her talent and resilience.

She is survived by two sons, nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Her daughter, Kara, passed away in 2011. Joan’s life story reflects resilience amid adversity and the enduring power of music in healing.
