Dr. John McElligott, a key advocate for truck drivers’ health and well-being, passed away at 80 on February 15. For over 30 years, he ran health clinics aimed at improving the lives of truckers, a community he believed was often neglected.
“Dr. John dedicated his life to supporting truck drivers. His work was beyond measure,” said his wife, Lisa McElligott. He was also a cofounder of the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund, which has provided critical support to truckers and their families facing illness or injury.
Donna Kennedy, a former director of the Fund, shared how McElligott’s vision transformed lives: “He believed that since truck drivers are the backbone of our country, we must care for them when they can’t care for themselves. He didn’t just raise awareness; he took action.”
Through his efforts, the Fund has reached over 5,000 drivers and raised more than $5 million for those in need. According to the Fund, McElligott “understood the high rates of chronic disease and lack of insurance affecting drivers. But it was the personal stories that truly moved him.”
McElligott’s background is equally impressive. He served as a Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam War and later graduated at the top of his class from Duke University’s Physician Assistant Program. With a Master of Public Health in Occupational Health and Safety from the University of Tennessee, he went on to medical school and completed his residency at Yale Griffin Hospital.
In 2023, he received the East Tennessee Healthcare Hero Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the Wall of Fame at the Mid-America Trucking Show, recognizing his significant contributions to the trucking industry.
Courtney Niemann, the current executive director of the St. Christopher Fund, emphasized that they will carry on McElligott’s mission. “We’re committed to serving drivers with the urgency and heart that he instilled in us,” she said.
McElligott’s legacy continues to inspire many, reminding us of the importance of caring for those who keep our roads safe and our economy moving.
