Oscar-winning film editor Marcia Lucas has passed away at 80. She is best known for her groundbreaking work on the original “Star Wars” and other major films from the 1970s.
Marcia died on May 27 at her vacation home in Rancho Mirage, California, due to metastatic cancer. Her family shared that she was a powerful influence in film, especially for women in the industry. “Marcia was a force,” they said. “She helped reshape film editing and paved the way for many.”
Born Marcia Lou Griffin on October 4, 1945, in Modesto, California, she grew up in North Hollywood. Marcia met George Lucas while both were assistants to the renowned film editor Verna Fields. They married in 1969. As George took off in his directing career, Marcia rose through the ranks of film editing. She co-edited “American Graffiti” and later shaped the editing of “Star Wars” and its sequel, “Return of the Jedi.”
Her talent was evident, as she received one Academy Award for “Star Wars.” She also worked on Martin Scorsese’s films like “Taxi Driver” and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” In a testimony to her skills, George once remarked that the climactic battle in “Star Wars” took Marcia eight weeks to edit, a process that usually took her much less time.
Marcia’s contributions went beyond her credited work. She had a significant impact on the final cut of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” suggesting changes that affected the film’s emotional resonance.
After adopting a daughter, Amanda, with George, the couple divorced in 1983. Marcia later married Tom Rodrigues and had another daughter, Amy, but they eventually divorced as well.
Marcia Lucas leaves behind a legacy as a trailblazer for women in film. She is survived by her daughters Amanda and Amy, along with several grandchildren. Funerals plans are pending, and the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
