LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marcia Lucas, the Oscar-winning editor of the original 1977 “Star Wars”, has passed away. Her family lawyer, Deidre Von Rock, shared that she died from metastatic cancer at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, surrounded by loved ones. She was 80.
Marcia was also the editor for 1983’s “Return of the Jedi” and worked on early films by George Lucas, including “THX 1138” and “American Graffiti.” In addition, she contributed to iconic films by Martin Scorsese, such as “Taxi Driver” and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” Her editing skills were often described as underappreciated in the “Star Wars” saga, a series that has captivated audiences for decades.
Marcia played a crucial role in shaping key moments in “Star Wars.” For example, she encouraged George to include Obi-Wan Kenobi in the lightsaber duel against Darth Vader. She also expertly sifted through extensive footage to create the thrilling rebel attack on the Death Star. George once noted how complex the project was, stating they had an overwhelming amount of footage to manage. “Nobody really has ever tried to interweave an actual plot story into a dogfight,” he explained to Rolling Stone shortly after the film’s release.
After her marriage to George from 1969 to 1983, Marcia married Tom Rodrigues, a production manager, and they stayed together until 1993. She leaves behind her daughters, Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper, as well as her grandchildren.
A family statement highlighted Marcia’s profound impact on film, stating, “Her influence on film is indelible.” Those closest to her will remember her not just as an editor, but as someone who brought love and joy to life. Her work excelled at capturing the emotional heart of each scene, making the viewer feel connected.
