In Lincoln Square, tragedy struck as Chicago police officer John Bartholomew was killed in a shooting at Swedish Hospital on Saturday. The 38-year-old officer, with a decade of service in the Albany Park District, was shot by a robbery suspect while being treated at the hospital.
Authorities reported that around 10:50 a.m., the suspect opened fire on Bartholomew and another officer and then escaped. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, but Bartholomew was pronounced dead just before 1 p.m. The second officer, a 21-year veteran, remains in critical condition.
After the shooting, a SWAT team launched a manhunt, eventually capturing the suspect near the hospital. A weapon was recovered at the scene, though police are still determining its origin.
This incident highlights the dangers police face daily. Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed his condolences, stating, “These are the dangers of policing… our officers go out there knowing they’re not safe.”
According to a 2022 report from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, fatalities among law enforcement officers have been increasing, with 558 officers dying in the line of duty that year, a significant rise from previous years. Such statistics underline the ongoing challenges facing police forces across the country.
Swedish Hospital reopened later that day. As the community processes this loss, many have taken to social media to express their grief and support for Bartholomew’s family and colleagues. Local hashtags related to the incident have seen increased activity, with users sharing their memories and condolences.
As investigations continue, no charges have been filed as of Sunday morning. The public is left wondering about the broader implications of such violence against police and how communities can better ensure the safety of those who protect them.
