Roger Allers, the brilliant mind behind beloved Disney classics like The Lion King and Aladdin, has passed away at 76. His loss has touched many in the animation world.

Dave Bossert, a producer and close collaborator, shared the news on Facebook. Reflecting on their last exchange, he said it felt surreal. They recently discussed travel plans, highlighting how unexpected Allers’ passing felt. Bossert praised Allers as a talented artist who played a crucial role during Disney’s animation renaissance.

Starting his journey at Disney on Tron in 1982, Allers quickly moved up, working on iconic films such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Bossert shared his memories, noting that Allers remained humble despite his success with The Lion King.

He treated everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their role. Bossert worked closely with Allers on The Little Matchgirl, appreciating his joyful spirit and generosity.

Disney CEO Bob Iger referred to Allers as a creative visionary whose storytelling left an everlasting impact. Iger highlighted how Allers understood the power of emotion and music in animation. His contributions greatly shaped a beloved era in Disney history.

Allers was born in Rye, New York in 1949 but grew up in Arizona. He pursued fine arts at Arizona State University before beginning his career with Lisberger Studios. He was involved in various projects, including Sesame Street, before honing his craft at Disney.

In addition to The Lion King, Allers contributed to several other films during his time with Disney, including Lilo & Stitch and The Emperor’s New Groove. He co-directed Open Season for Sony and directed The Prophet in 2014.

His legacy continues through his works and the lives he touched. Allers is survived by his ex-wife, Leslee Hackenson, and their children, Leah and Aidan.
