Ruth Lawrence, a pioneering pediatrician and expert in breastfeeding science, passed away in October at the age of 101. For over 70 years at the University of Rochester Medical Center, she turned breastfeeding from a neglected topic into a vital area of study and practice.
As the founding director of the Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center, Ruth authored *Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession*, first published in 1979 and now in its ninth edition. This book has become the go-to reference for healthcare professionals. Kathy Parrinello, CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital, noted, “Dr. Lawrence reshaped our understanding of infant feeding, and her legacy lives on in countless clinicians, nurses, and researchers.”
Ruth’s journey began at Antioch College, where she was one of the few women admitted to medical school in the 1940s. She graduated with a medical degree from URochester in 1949, alongside her husband, Robert. After becoming Yale University’s first female intern, she returned to Rochester to lead the well-baby and preemie nurseries at Strong Memorial Hospital. Her career milestones also include founding the region’s Poison Control and Drug Information Center in 1958, one of only two in the nation at that time.
Throughout her career, Ruth authored over 200 research papers and played a key role in establishing neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at URochester. She was a mentor to many healthcare professionals. In 2022, the Medical Center named its new Division of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine after her, recognizing her groundbreaking contributions.
Ruth’s influence extended far beyond her own institution. A 2022 survey showed that nearly 83% of healthcare providers believe training in breastfeeding support is essential. This shift in perspective reflects the foundation Ruth laid, emphasizing the importance of proper infant feeding methods.
Her numerous accolades include the AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award and the Macy-György Award from the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation. Ruth Lawrence’s work not only changed how breastfeeding is viewed but also continues to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.
