Steve Taneyhill, a notable quarterback at the University of South Carolina, has passed away at 52. Originating from Altoona, Pennsylvania, Taneyhill played four seasons for the Gamecocks from 1992 to 1995. He left a lasting mark, setting school records with 753 completions and 62 passing touchdowns. He also amassed 8,782 passing yards and boasted a completion rate of 60.5%.
In 2006, he was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame. His impact was felt early on; he was named Freshman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1992 and recognized as Freshman All-America by Football News.
He was not just a prolific passer; Taneyhill had a unique style that endeared him to fans, especially with his iconic mullet and celebratory “home run swing” after touchdown passes. One of his standout moments was leading the Gamecocks to their first bowl victory against West Virginia in the 1994 Carquest Bowl. Taneyhill also captained the team in 1995, where he continued to shine.
Throughout his college career, he led in passing every season and had an impressive eight games with over 300 passing yards. Notably, he set two of the top three passing yardage games in the school’s history—471 yards against Mississippi State and 451 yards against East Carolina.
His records included the highest single-game completions and attempts (39 of 58 vs. East Carolina in 1994) and five touchdown passes against both Louisiana Tech and Vanderbilt in 1995. His remarkable 29 touchdowns in the 1995 season continue to stand as a school record.
After college, Taneyhill transitioned to coaching, leading Chesterfield High School to three consecutive South Carolina state championships from 2007 to 2009. He also coached Union High School for four years from 2012 to 2015.
In addition to coaching, Taneyhill became a successful businessman, running ventures in Columbia and Spartanburg.
