Rescue Mission: 17 Stranded Indian Tourists Safely Evacuated from Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal

Kathmandu: On Thursday, security teams rescued 72 trekkers, including 17 from India, who were trapped at Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal’s Myagdi region. Heavy snowfall had blocked trekking routes, making it impossible for them to leave.

The Armed Police Force (APF) reported that all the foreign tourists stranded were Indian nationals. The snowfall created challenges along the Dhaulagiri Circuit trail, which connects Myagdi and Mustang districts and is often called the “Hidden Valley.”

A dedicated rescue team was dispatched from Mustang to assist those caught in the snowy terrain. They successfully brought the trekkers down from an altitude of 4,190 meters to safety within the Annapurna Rural Municipality.

The trekkers had been stuck due to relentless rain and snow that began on Monday night. The rescue operation involved both the Armed Police Force and local volunteers. “Our team worked hard to clear the trails and ensure everyone was safe,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Lil Bahadur Bhujel.

Currently, the trekkers are staying in local lodges, as the weather remains unstable. They will return to Kathmandu and then to their homes once conditions improve. Although Wednesday brought some clear skies, new snow fell on Thursday morning. In light of the ongoing snowfall and potential risks, Myagdi’s Chief District Officer, Badri Prasad Tiwari, stated that all treks to Annapurna Base Camp are restricted until October 31 for safety reasons.

This incident highlights the challenges that nature can pose to adventure tourism. According to recent surveys, nearly 30% of trekkers in Nepal report weather-related difficulties during their expeditions, emphasizing the need for proper planning and safety measures.
