Resilient Kosher Food Truck Owners Fight Back After Theft: Their Inspiring Story

Kosher Food Truck Faces Repeated Thefts in Salt Lake City

In Salt Lake City, Yalla Kosher, the area’s only kosher food truck, is enduring a series of thefts. The truck is usually parked at Chabad Square in Sugar House, but its power source has been stolen twice. Rabbi Avremi Zippel, who runs the truck, shared that they use a 200-foot copper wire to keep their operations running. The most recent theft occurred early Saturday morning.

Rabbi Zippel reported, “It’s hard to believe someone would take something so heavy.” Surveillance footage from July 11 shows two men swiftly unplugging the wire and taking it away. Initially, Zippel thought they hadn’t secured it well enough, viewing the incident as an impulsive crime.

To prevent further thefts, the team attached the power source to the concrete. Yet, just this past weekend, another theft occurred. This time, only one individual was seen on video with tools, and it seemed planned. He unscrewed their locks and caused damage to the outlets, leaving behind a pile of human waste.

“This feels personal,” Zippel said. Both incidents have been reported to the Salt Lake City Police. Despite the setbacks, he stated they remain committed to serving the community. “We won’t be intimidated by this pattern of behavior. We’ll continue doing what we love.”

In light of these challenges, Yalla Kosher has set up a GoFundMe to raise funds for a more permanent power solution. They faced significant losses from the July theft and are eager to find a way to protect their operations.

Broader Context

This isn’t just a local issue. Theft rates are rising in cities across the U.S. According to recent FBI data, property crime increased by 3% nationwide in 2021. Many small businesses are vulnerable, especially food trucks, which often lack adequate security.

Community support is vital in these situations. Groups online, like those on social media platforms, often rally around small businesses facing hardships. User reactions highlight a strong desire for local solutions to crime and support for budding entrepreneurs.

As the Yalla Kosher team continues their fight, they remind us of the resilience found in community-focused businesses. Their determination to overcome adversity is an inspiration, reinforcing the importance of community support in the face of challenges.
