Emily Burrell, a math teacher at South Lakes High School, has been named one of the best educators in the nation by the White House. For her dedication, she received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This award is the highest honor for K-12 teachers in math, science, engineering, and technology.
Burrell, who has spent a decade at South Lakes, is among 336 educators recognized this year. The announcement came on January 13, 2025, from then-President Joe Biden.
In her words, Burrell feels honored and sees this recognition as a testament to the hard work done at South Lakes. She emphasizes the commitment of her colleagues to nurture the next generation of innovators within a diverse community.
Before her time at South Lakes, Burrell taught for 11 years at Wakefield High School and two years at Fairfax High School. At South Lakes, she focuses on algebra and other math subjects for students in grades 9 to 12. She is also an equity co-lead teacher, aiming to create an inclusive environment that champions diversity.
According to her PAEMST bio, she is dedicated to empowering her students. She promotes collaboration and real-world learning to help students grasp mathematical concepts. Burrell also presents at local and state conferences, discussing community-building through collaborative learning.
Burrell holds a bachelor’s degree in math from the University of Virginia and two master’s degrees from George Mason University—one in secondary math and another in education policy.
The PAEMST awards were created in 1983 and aim to honor teachers who inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. In addition to the award, recipients receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation, a certificate signed by the president, and a trip to D.C. for an awards ceremony and professional events.
Only six teachers from Virginia received this award this year, highlighting Burrell’s exceptional teaching and impact. Her commitment to enhancing STEM education is a shining example of educational excellence.
