The Nigerian government has updated its National Erosion and Flood Control Policy (NEFCOP) to tackle the growing issues of erosion and flooding, worsened by climate change. This update was shared by Mahmud Kambari, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, at a workshop in Abuja, bringing together key stakeholders for feedback.
NEFCOP, first introduced in 2005, needed this revision to stay relevant amid changing environmental conditions. Kambari pointed out the serious consequences these natural disasters have had on communities, from loss of life and displacement to damage to farmland and infrastructure, which hinder Nigeria’s progress.
“Erosion and flooding affect not just the environment; they impact development, society, and the economy,” Kambari stated. The revised policy aims to create a structured approach to manage these challenges through better land and water resource practices.
Kambari insisted that stakeholders should ensure the policy considers Nigeria’s varied environments and stay committed to effective monitoring and implementation. “Environmental sustainability is essential for our survival and progress,” he added.
Musa Shaibu, from the ACReSAL project, commended the Ministry’s dedication and promised ongoing support for flood and erosion management. Usman Bokani, who oversees erosion and flooding at the Ministry, expressed concern about the increasing frequency of these issues, emphasizing their risks to livelihoods.
The revised policy integrates modern technology and aligns with international best practices. Experts believe this update is crucial for helping both federal and state governments reduce erosion and flood risks, promoting resilience and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Recent reports indicate that Nigeria experiences one of the highest rates of erosion in the world, with over 1,000 square kilometers affected annually. This alarming statistic underlines the urgency of implementing the updated NEFCOP effectively.
