The NFL is shaking things up for the 2025 season. The competition committee is suggesting some important rules changes, including making the new kickoff rule a permanent fixture. This change aims to encourage more exciting returns while keeping players safer.
Last year, the league tried out this new kickoff rule on a trial basis. It increased the kickoff return rate significantly, jumping from a low of 21.8% in 2023 to 32.8%. That’s an extra 332 returns! To further boost returns, the committee proposes moving the touchback spot from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line. This setup might entice kickers to opt for shorter kicks, leading to more action on the field.
In addition to the kickoff changes, teams can now announce their intention for an onside kick at any point in the game if they’re behind. This tweak could open up more strategic possibilities during games.
Safety remains a key concern. In the last season, there were 59 returns of at least 40 yards—the most since 2016. The NFL reported a 43% drop in concussions from previous seasons, which is promising news for player health.
Moreover, the committee is also looking to expand instant replay. They want to allow on-field officials to consult with a replay assistant to review certain calls—like facemask penalties and roughing the kicker—if there is “clear and obvious” evidence that a mistake was made. This change aims to make games fairer and enhance the overall viewing experience.
As the league prepares for these potential changes, fans are reacting positively, eager for more thrilling plays while prioritizing player safety. Changes like these highlight how the NFL continually adapts to improve the game.
