Review Board Shocks with Temporary Reinstatement of Six Fired Federal Employees

In a significant move, the Merit Systems Protection Board has decided to temporarily reinstate six federal workers who were fired. This decision shines a light on a broader effort by their lawyers to restore many jobs lost during the Trump administration.

The board, which reviews appeals from federal employees regarding workplace actions, announced its ruling this week. The reinstatement is effective until April 10, allowing more time for the Office of Special Counsel to investigate the complaints from these employees. It’s worth noting that these six workers represent different federal agencies.

Raymond A. Limon, a board member, noted that there are reasonable grounds to believe these agencies engaged in unfair hiring practices. This ruling could set a precedent for other federal employees who were fired while still on probation, potentially helping many more workers in similar situations.

Interestingly, the lawyer looking into these personnel actions, Hampton Dellinger, and the chairwoman of the board, Cathy Harris, were also dismissed by Trump earlier this month. Both are contesting their removals and have temporarily been reinstated by federal judges.

Dellinger, who heads the Office of Special Counsel designed to protect whistleblowers, was fired on February 7. However, a federal judge has paused his dismissal until March 1, allowing him to continue his important work protecting federal employees.
