Over the past 26 years, the National Spring Clean has become Ireland’s largest anti-litter campaign. Volunteers have collectively removed around 50,000 tonnes of litter from streets, parks, and beaches. This year, organizers hope to gather even more participants to join in this vital effort.

Emlyn Cullen, Programme Manager at An Taisce, noted the significant impact of the campaign on Ireland’s environment. “We’ve seen real progress in combatting litter, thanks to community efforts,” she shared. In fact, last year, nearly one-third of the waste collected was recycled, highlighting the campaign’s focus on sustainability.

Recent statistics from an Irish Businesses Against Litter survey show that the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) led to a nearly 50% drop in plastic bottles and cans at monitored sites across 40 counties. This reflects a growing awareness of the need for waste reduction. Despite this progress, litter levels remain alarming, particularly with an increase in smoking-related waste such as cigarette butts and vape cartridges.

Minister Alan Dillon pointed out that now is the perfect time to get outside and join a community cleanup. “Every year, local volunteers show incredible community spirit,” he noted, “I believe this year will see even more people getting involved.”

Emlyn Cullen added that while the DRS has made a positive difference, initiatives like the National Spring Clean are essential. “It’s a great opportunity to give back to your community,” she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering can register as an individual or in groups to receive a free clean-up kit. This event is a wonderful way to engage with fellow community members while making a tangible impact on local environments.
