CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Fire FC is making headlines yet again with a new coaching change. They hope that this time, a local talent can help revive the team’s fortunes.
On Monday, the team kicked off practice at the Intentional Sports Complex on the West Side. This is a significant moment, marking the return of Gregg Berhalter to an MLS team for the first time since 2018. He previously coached the Columbus Crew and had a stint with the U.S. Men’s National Team until last July.
Berhalter didn’t waste any time defining his vision for the Fire. “We’re aiming to build a world-class organization. We want to develop both players and staff,” he shared during the first day of preseason camp. He emphasized the importance of connecting with the city of Chicago and igniting local support. “We want to win,” he added.
Hugo Cuypers, the team’s main striker, echoed Berhalter’s sentiments. After the Fire failed to reach the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, Cuypers is focused on rebuilding. He knows that success starts with the entire team supporting one another, both on and off the field.
“Last year, I didn’t get to know my teammates before joining,” Cuypers explained. “Now, I’m much more relaxed and ready to contribute to the team’s success.” With a clearer understanding of the squad, he feels more prepared to help boost their performance this season.
Berhalter mentioned that the team is still hunting for new signings, believing they are just three players away from being fully competitive.
