For almost ten years, Regis University in Denver has been working on a big redevelopment project. Recently, the Denver City Council gave the thumbs up for their plans. Rev. D. Scott Hendrickson, SJ, the university’s interim president, expressed the desire for Regis to be a central part of the city.
The project aims to create welcoming public areas. This includes spaces for shops, new housing, and necessary academic expansions. Hendrickson mentioned, “We want to build a community-friendly space.” The development is set to transform an area on Federal Boulevard, where there are currently parking lots, a McDonald’s, and other small businesses.
This redevelopment, dubbed “Regis Village,” could also bring in additional revenue for the university. As costs for education continue to rise, Hendrickson noted the importance of diverse income sources to support student scholarships and financial aid.
Community members, like Bill Killam, who has lived nearby for decades, are excited yet concerned. He wishes the university had provided more details about what exactly will be built. “Without knowing specifics like how many homes or stores will be added, it’s tough to fully back the project,” Killam shared. Residents voiced their worries in a letter to the city council, hoping for ongoing community input as plans develop.
Experts in urban planning suggest that such mixed-use developments can significantly enhance neighborhoods. Studies reveal that areas with community-focused spaces often see an uptick in local business engagement. Plus, they can boost nearby property values. Hendrickson emphasized the university’s commitment to staying connected with local residents and businesses throughout this process.
While there’s no clear timeline for when the project will finish, the dialogue between Regis University and the community continues. “It’s vital for us to remain involved and listen to our neighbors,” Hendrickson added.
