On December 17, 2025, the UN Climate Change Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal announced an exciting new chapter. After ten years of showcasing climate action efforts worldwide, the NAZCA portal is getting a makeover aimed at boosting ambition and innovation.
During COP30 in Belém, the UN unveiled its roadmap for revamping the NAZCA portal. This project aims to create a modern platform that will serve as the main hub for credible climate action data from various groups, including businesses, cities, and civil society. The new portal will gather information on mitigation efforts, adaptations, and how these actions are realized.
The original portal, launched at COP20 in Lima, was designed to highlight the commitments of non-state actors. It gained formal recognition at COP21 in Paris, further emphasizing its importance in tracking climate progress and enhancing transparency across different sectors.
Now, the portal is set for a major upgrade. The vision is clear: to create an engaging user experience that synchronizes with the UNFCCC Climate Data Hub. The updated platform aims to bolster transparency and improve the ability to implement the Paris Agreement effectively.
At COP30, Vlad Trusca, UN Climate Change Transparency Manager, discussed the exciting new features. The modernization will improve user experience and expand data accessibility. It will also introduce tools to foster stakeholder engagement, signaling a more inclusive approach to climate action.
Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, former Minister of the Environment of Peru, spoke about how transparency in climate initiatives has evolved significantly over the years. He noted that these transparency tools now play a vital role in building trust, especially in developing nations. The NAZCA portal continues to support this transparency, enabling non-state actors’ contributions to be recognized and valued.
The portal also aims to include a NAZCA Network. This network will focus on engaging stakeholders through workshops and collaborations, gathering insights to continuously improve the user interface. The modernized portal will feature new self-service options and enhanced modules to better represent local and regional efforts, aligning them with national climate goals.
Insights from experts at the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) emphasized the portal’s unique ability to connect various climate actions. Clare Everett from CDP noted that the multi-stakeholder nature of the portal can set a solid foundation for committed climate actions at all levels. Such a platform also allows for sharing real-world climate stories, a strategy highlighted by CEEW’s Vishwas Chitale as a way to raise awareness and inspire others.
As the NAZCA portal enters this transformative phase, it reaffirms its role as a key resource for climate action data, covering various aspects such as mitigation and resilience. By aligning with the Climate Data Hub and emphasizing transparency and data sharing, the portal aims to facilitate a broader range of climate initiatives globally.
